I'm new to this whole thing. Last June I bought a Whites Prizim something. I used it about 3-4 time last year and got tons of false reading but never thought anything of it. Well today my Dad and I went to check out an old legend. Supposedly in a certain set of woods a bunch of revolutionary soldiers hid in a natural hole from british troops. This is just a legend but I thought this would be a cool place so we decided to check it out. The second we got into the woods I was getting tons of false readings so I decided I'd take it down to the local metal detecting store sometime this week. We then just decided we would focus on finding the trail this hole was off of and to find the hole. Well while walking we found a trail. While on the trail we found where we think the hole was. (There's just 2 possible locations and they are pretty close to each other) We decided to survey the site as it is pretty large. We hiked to the top of a hill and found a pallet next to a tree. There was also a piece of cement in the ground. At first it looked like a foundation so I got mad excited! Then I realized it was just a pole. I decided to dig because my Dad suggested it may be a marker. The both of us started to dig but the pole kept going. We dug around it and finally about 2 - 3 feet down we pulled the cement pole out. We thought at first maybe there was something under it but there wasn't. We dug another 4-6 inches and then one of our shovels broke. The both of us agree it is most likely a marker for something. Because why would anyone bring a heavy and long cement pole so deep into the woods? Also why would anyone bury it in so far and make it so long? Maybe they wanted it to stay there because they left something near by and would use that to help them recover it. We are going to go back next weekend and look for A. Any other markers, B. To metal detect the hole where the soldiers should've hid (If the legend is true) C. To keep digging in that spot to see if we find anything. I hope to find out what I am doing wrong or what is wrong w/ my metal detector. What are your opinions of this cement in the middle of some deep woods?

Well, good luck on the pole hole and the hiding place. The false readings might be because your sensitivity is too high or some other adjustment. Or maybe the area is full of iron. Anyway, good luck with your site and your detector.

Hope your find turns out to be something special for you. On the problem you are having; check out White's web site for the video on your model. Yes, might be sensitivity set too high, or not on preset, and check your cable connection too. Make sure it is inserted good and then twisted to a full stop.

Hay DAS7NY,

It kind of sounds like a survey marker.

Survey markers make up most of the few

verticle pole like things in the boonies.

In most states, it is against the law to

destroy or move these markers.

There could be other reasons for it being

there, however. It could be the remains

of a structure.

Good Luck,

Tabdog

I would put that back quickly as it is a federal offense for removing boundry markers, Big Fine if caught.

This was old and worn. Moss was growing on it and it was in the middle of the woods. I definitely know it isn't a boundary marker. This thing was not just sticking up out of the ground it was sticking out maybe 2 inches and we dug it up. It was also placed on the highest point in the woods? Would that mean anything?

Just because it's old and worn does not mean it is not a marker. Research the entire area first and secure permission. Talk to anyone you can about said area. It's not worth getting into trouble...

Said area is unowned and the roads near the woods have little to no traffic. No one is even near the woods that is why we think this thing so deep into the woods is so bizarre. It was so small at first it was not a boundary marker. It looked like an old foundation at the top of a hill but it seems it isn't. Picture a grey concrete brick burried vertically in the ground so only about 1/4 is sticking out. That's what it was like.

From your description it sounds like a State or Federal boundary marker.

Boundary markers are found in some of the darnedest places.

Do some research on the Area and the type of boundary markers used through the years.

Most States and the Federal Government do have statues protecting these markers.

The key word in all of them is knowingly defacing or removing.

I do not think that apples to you. If you find it is a marker put it back.

If not , happy hunting. :)

There, I posted a link to the photo.

clean off the top, look for any marking, sounds like an elevation marker to me,,,
put it back

The top was just like a piece of worn concrete. One of the first things I did was check for markings. It looked as if it were a foundation. It cannot be a boundary marker! It was not meant to he seen. Anyway I was not going to take that thing with me it was reasonably heavy. Therefore it would be in said woods. Can't you tell it wasn't disturbed for a very long time! I'm 99.99999999999999999999% sure its not a boundary marker! (The other .00000000000000000000001% is just to show anything's possible!)

I agree with the others, not that you seem to care.

The markers can be anyplace... woods, middle of the street, middle of a sidewalk, middle of a mountain top... anyplace.

They are almost always completely buried and have some type of identification on it. Your's seems to be just a chunk of concrete, but, looking at the shape, I also think it's a marker.

Maybe an elevation marker (highest spot around you said), or maybe an old property marker too.

Why ask for opinions then disagree with them all even when you said it might be a marker in the first post?

Where exactly did you find it? Did I miss the state and/or location? It may help us help you figure the mystery out!

looks like a marker the game commission used to use here in Pa. Hope you find what your looking for.

You may have misunderstood me. I believe it is a marker but not a state or federal marker. I think maybe someone placed it there so maybe they could find something they left. I there are no markings on it and it seems like the person did a really quick job. I'm not asking for opinions to just disagree. Before I posted the picture everyone just said the same thing. Now I'm hoping since I posted a picture I may get a different response. I just believe a federal marker would be little bit better well kept. This was in to reasonable location either. It's on Long Island, NY in Suffolk County if that helps.

"Said area is unowned"
Not likely! Every bit of land in the country is owned by someone or some level of government.
