The Dead Man's Penny as it was known, was a memorial medallion issued to the families of soldiers of the British Empire who were killed in battle during the first world war. If was a token of condolence, also known as the 'Dead Man's Penny' or 'Death Penny' because of its resemblance to the coin. 1,355,000 were issued, made from 450 tons of bronze. Source: Wiki
