Went to an old site on the back roads of west virginia today and found some treats. I found several bullets and a 44 merc to add to the scrapbooks. This is my 10th peice of silver for the year. 7 mercs and 3 quarters so far. Earliest quarter is a 38 and earliest merc is a 37. I am gaining on the bullets too. Two bullets are from yesterday and the one with the funny shape is new too me so if anyone knows what it could possibly be I would sure appreciate it. HH from the sticks. :headbang:

Nice finds! Look forward to hearing from the experts on here about the bullets. Well done!!

Me as well. I find a lot of small caliber bullets as well, that are on a small skirmish site that the confederates were occupying. I have found mostly two ringers, some solid, some with a hollow in it. I have heard gardner 54's but I am no expert. I have found a few three ringers on the other side of the hill but none like the one I found yesterday. Around my parts were moslty militia and small bands of rednecks. Yeehaw. No matter what I am enjoying finding them and hope there is more to come.

Amen to that!

In case you are wondering. I have a rosie too. lol. I do have all my toes, fingers and teeth as well.

The third and fourth photos are of a modern bullet called a "Maxie ball" as opposed to a "minnie ball." The Minne ball was invented by a French officer named Minne, pronounced Minay. These were used in the Civil War. The Maxie ball is modern, and needs a muzzle loader with a faster twist than the rifling in a round ball muzzle loading rifle. Rifles for these bullets were being manufactured in the 1980's if not a little before then, although I can't remember them in the 1970's, and I've been shooting muzzle loaders before that time.

That would make sense on the maxie ball cause I found it at a boy scout camp yesterday. The others come from a skirmish site and I have many confirmed ones from there. I find a lot of the smaller two rings up on that hill and the big 3 rings on the other side of the river. Thanks for the info. Here is a three ringer from the other side and another different one from another site nearby.
