The British have a MUCH better system of dealing with folks who metal detect than we have here in the US. Over there there are more places open to hunting and when you find ancient items you must report them and let them be examined by government archaeologists. If they decide your find is treasure, yes, they take it, BUT they pay you fair market value for it. They do not really consider coins or jewelry modern or a couple hundred years old "treasure". I agree with TH that those sweet 13th century items are indeed treasure and I am sure the finder will be properly compensated and his finds will end up in a public museum.
