After hitting the cavalry camp a couple of days ago, and doing fairly well for my 2nd time there, my brother and I decided to make a day of it. It had been raining since last night, and there was a winter storm warning for ice today, but we were not going to let that stop us. This morning after he got off work, we met at 6:30 am at the site. Had a quick breakfast and were digging by 6:45. Ten minutes into the hunt, I found what had to be a campsite. I started digging bullet after bullet and 2 1/2 hours later I had dug approximately 60 bullets when I found the SNY buckle. I had to make 2 trips to the truck to unload my pouch. I started working my way back to the same area, but before I got there I hit a few signals, a few bullets and then a solid signal that was totally different from the rest! I couldn't believe when I pulled up a wreath from a 2-piece buckle. I was really excited and went to show my brother (DCooper1). He said to hit the area hard and hopefully the other piece would be there. Twenty minutes later, my machine was screaming once again. I just knew, it had to be the 2nd piece, only 15 feet from where I found the wreath. I hollered to my brother and started to dig the hole, but he was yelling that he wanted to get it on video for everyone to see. Amazingly, I had 2 signals in the hole which you will see in my brothers video. When I unearthed the tongue and saw that it had "CS" on it, I was totally speachless... I knew that I had found "the Holy Grail" of relic hunting! I should take this moment to thank my brother, David, for encouraging me to start metal detecting, when I thought I just didn't have the time to take on yet another "hobby" in my life. I have been digging for 16 months now, and found things I never would've dreamed of. I consider myself very fortunate, and mostly, very lucky in this aspect. I hope you enjoy the pictures, and the video my brother will be posting.

You are on a site of a lifetime...Keep the finds coming
Congradulations

2 piece buckle is a 3000.00 find!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BAnner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let me be the first to congratulate you on a BANNER find!!!!!!

Here's the link to the video:

Congratulations to my brother for more incredible finds. Yes, I have heard many times that he has a golden horseshoe, let's just say.....somewhere. My response is usually something to the effect of "you have to be out there swinging in order to find stuff." Well, as he has mentioned in his post today, he hasn't been at it for too long but has already logged TONS of hours, covered many miles of turf, dug tons of nails, horseshoes, pulltabs and all the other "junk" that none of us like but he has been persistent, always hunting!!! Yes, it does help to have a good place to go but I can assure you, the places aren't going to come looking for you.
We knew early yesterday that today was going to be REALLY crappy, a day when you would love to be inside, doing nothing. That didn't stop us for a moment, we came prepared: plenty of warm clothes, rain suits, SEVERAL pairs of gloves, drinks & food. We arrived just at daylight, ate, got dressed, and took off. It was already raining pretty good, it would stop once in a while but we hunted on. As my brother mentioned, he hit a hot spot pretty early on and was digging like crazy, every time I would look up at him, he was on his knees and up to his elbows in dirt. ;D
A little while later when he dug the wreath he shouted at me that he thought he found a Confederate buckle. I immediately thought to myself "how can you THINK you found a Confederate buckle ??? ???" He held it up but I couldn't see it that far so he brought it over, I told him he wouldn't know for sure it was Confederate unless he found the other half, so he better get back over there and start hunting. Within no time, he said he thought he found the other half, I immediately grabbed the video camera and..............well, hopefully the video is working by now..
 :o  :o

I feel embarassed to post my meager finds for the day after seeing what he ended up with but we all have a bad day once in a while.

Minton, Go back and hit that area hard, I never would've dreamed both pieces were only fifteen feet away from each other but you might be as lucky as I was. Thanks for the reply...

Neat! I found a wreath half in florida years ago. You are fortunate to find the other half. Awesome find!!!!!

i am in SE ohio.... i found my half in a private yard i town... small yard.... house was built around 1893..... I was thinking maybe it came from someplace else and they used fill from that other spot... it was only about an inch down...... I hit and re-hit that yard and the neighboring yard..... it is a corner lot.. so only neighbor on one side.... I am going to try again in the spring.. I hate to go to the house owner and be like..... "Yeah I am looking for the other half of this 3000.00 buckle in your yard" LOL So I only went there once or twice this yr.....was your CS half the same reading as the wreath part?

Minton, I was using my Whites DFX today. They both read a solid 68 on the screen and a solid tone. Good luck finding it in the spring...

Way cool find, TC!!! Fantastic buckle!

From reading of you and your brother, I've been expecting something like that--just not so soon. :) Congrats!

Minton, if it helps at all, think of the homeowner situation this way: If--and I'm guessing here--the wreath part is is worth less than $1500 and the complete buckle is worth $3000, if you split it with the owner to get permission to hit it hard again, if you find the other half, you're still up the difference between half and what the partial would bring. Of course, that only works if you'd sell it or would be willing to pay for his half. (The folks from the U.K. have it both better and worse.)

Good lord.................um..............wow...................geez...............I um...............wow

I'm just speechless.

BANNER!

A "Banner" day for sure!!!!
Congrats! Dale
