A New Year's Resolution Achieved-First Large Cent-1833
It might not have been the best weekend to detect in the hudson valley, but since I haven't for two weeks, I was detecting in the snow on Saturday and today. I hunted the woods where I've been finding the barbers and indians and came up with just 11 cents in clad. I also found 2 toy cars, one gave me a thrill because of the gold paint on top and the other one looks like it was in an accident. I tried a park in Wappingers where 9D turns, Meiser Park. Despite it being across Village hall and a local police station, it's been heavily detected because of a sign that says it was a colonial spot. I got 2 wheats there, a 1925 and 1953 D, and a 58D nickel as a surface find and some clad for a total of 98 cents clad for the 2 days. Still not wanting to give up, I headed back to the CIA and headed into the woods again. I tried a path near where I found an 1830's navy button. This spot hasn't given anything else good besides the occasional clad, but I was getting desperate. A freak snowstorm quickly brought almost blizzard conditions, but it soon passed. In the meantime I dug a big spoon head, it's a little bigger than a soup spoon. About a half hour later, I got a nice solid quarter signal. It was 4 inches, good for an old coin. I dug a hole with the Lesche, put my pinpointer in the hole, removed the rest of the soft dirt with my hands and to my surprise, pulled out a large cent. I headed back to my dorm and rinsed it off a little bit and under my loupe, I can read the date-1833. The last digit is the weakest, unfortunately, but I can see the top and bottom curves of the 3. It's not an 1838 or 39 because starting in 1835, the 3 has a curl under the top, which this one doesn't. I'm going to start hunting this area a little bit more because I think there was a mill nearby. There's also a big drinking spot in the same area, loaded with pull tabs, bottlecaps, cans, and some clad. I think there's more old coins out there. I have no class tomorrow, I might try again
