A pair of stars

These two objects remind me of oversized upholstery tacks, but they're to thick and heavy I believe to be that. Anybody know what these are or what they were used for? When I first found them (non-dug) my mind went straight to Texas or Mississippi, but that's just the Civil War collector in me.......they don't appear old enough for that....but just what they really are and their use is what I would like to know if you have any ideas. Thanks!​
