A piece of a piece of 8...except it's a fake.

Thought this was junk until I started rubbing it a little and saw the face, then the crown on the back. Hit it hard with the Barkeepers Friend figuring I couldn't really hurt it much. Saw the 8 clear as day and got all excited..... but after looking at it for a while and showing it to someone else, it's old as the hills but it's not real silver... not something you see every other day either...

But it's every bit as good as a genuine one in that condition. (actually better because there's more a reason to look that way) You seem to be putting it in the same category as a modern reproduction, and the two are very far apart.

Perhaps instead of calling it "fake" I should have said "counterfeit" and instead of saying "old as the hills" I should have said "period of Carolus III". :dontknow:.

Rest assured, given I took the time to put up the photos here, my level of intrinsic appreciation for this broken up little nugget is very high, though I am still hoping for first real 8 reale.

Thanks for looking :hello:

I agree. Thats a way cool find that I'd be proud to display.

Very cool find. Are you sure its counterfeit? The details are very accurate and besides the crusty sand and soil stuck to it, it sure looks like silver. Does it sound like silver when you drop it on a solid surface?

Welcome to the "Counterfeit Piece of Eight Club". Awesome find. I was disappointed when I first dug mine back in 2007 too, but after all the great replies and info I received, I realized it was actually a better find than the real deal like Iron Patch said. Here is my post from 2007 if you care to check t out. Some great info.

CONGRATS to you!!!! Display that piece with pride.

Still a cool find nonetheless!

Real or contemporary counterfeit-a treasure either way. Congrats.

Very nice find. I'm jealous you're able to hunt!

Yeap, I'm in that club, shame I can't join the real one....

:laughing7: Modern Miner ... I thought the same thing when I read that... more like a league!

Thanks for putting up that link... that was a wild ride.

Here are a few better pictures where you can see the plated part....plus it's partner it was found with, this George II (1740 I think)....imagine the stories these could tell!
