A plate, but what plate?

Found this clip corner plate a few years ago and have always assumed that it was late 1800s issue. Fairly stiff sheet brass, it is missing it's loop as can be seen by the spots on the corners. The front is plain without any evidence of former markings. The plate measures 62 mm tall or over 2 3/8" by 56mm or just over 2 1/4 wide.

Dug in Seabrook SC, and found not far from a post civil war New Jersey button.

Any info on it would be appreciated.

Going by the size and fastener, I said 1870's-1880's, but with some research on some Militia buckles i found this link that shows at buckle/plate #11 a 1840's Militia plate with the same fastener but does show it was made to 1870's. http://www.midtenrelics.com/plates/plainmilitiaplate.JPG

Here's a belt plate on here a little bigger than yours. Scroll down to pic number 26. It only shows one side.

I don't know if this will help but it's close and maybe they were made different sizes and might not be civil war related.
