I have the opertunity to pick up a Saber II cheap, but I see there are some other Sabers out there.
To all you old timers who have experience, what is the difference between the:

Silver Saber and the Silver Umax?

The Silver Saber II and the SIlver Saber and Silver Umax?

It seems to me they are the same thing wrapped in a different package?

What will one do for me that the other won't?

Another question: I am really used to hearing the MXT sound when I swing my machine.
What does the Tesoro sound like? A bell tone like Garrett or something like the MXT?

Just one last question: Are the coils for these three machines interchangeable?

(1) Silver Sabre-- The original unit contained in a rectangular shaped metal-bodied box. The box was mounted to the top of the shaft; then to the under-shaft mount.

(2) Silver Sabre II-- The next generation of Silvers; contained in a plastic box with more rounded edges and mounted under-shaft.

(3) Silver Sabre II umax-- Final (current) generation. Small box; mounted top of shaft.

Of the three, my personal choice would be in the order of their manufacture---1, 2, and 3. It seems to me that the detecting ability of the silver line decreased as it evolved. I have heard and read comments of many other users who agree. About 2 months ago, I bid on a first generation Silver Saber on eBay and lost to a last second snipe-bid. My max bid was $180 and it wasn't enough. Again, this was for the original Silver Sabre--about a 15 to 18 year-old machine.

The Tesoro's sound is similar to the basic White's buzz. That's as good a description as can be by words alone. Most Tesoros have a Tone Adjustment that allows the operator can change the PITCH of the tone. Some folks confuse that with a volume control. It isn't.

Tesoros are EXCELLENT machines and the only manufacturer with the confidence in their product to assign lifetime warrentees.

I don't know if the coils are interchangeable amongst all three.

The original Sabre had a very nice tone.

The Sabre II had an all-metal mode threshold adjustment knob on the end of the control box that faces the coil.

I've owned and used them all and they were all about the same in depth.

If I were to guess at one being a little deeper I'd go with the new model Silver uMax.

I really wish Tesoro would have included a threshold adjustment on the new Silver.

There are differences in the various Sabre and uMax detectors but they're favored mostly by personal preferences.

I had a hard time selling my original Sabre and my Sabre II. I got about $125 for my mint original and my very nice Sabre II brought only about $150 as I recall. I had to sell the Sabre II to a buyer in the U.K. because nobody in the U.S. wanted it at the time (about 3 months ago).

The market on these old Sabres varies drastically. The same is true with the Bandido. These auction off for as little as $175 and as high as $350.

I really like all the Sabre and uMax machines but considering all things I'd say the Tejon is the best Tesoro made today. Sometimes these go for as little as $350 in used condition.

All the above are beaten by the Minelab Sovereign GT. I bought one in mint condition postpaid for $350.

There are many options and they're all winners once learned.
