In 1495, a warship named Gribshunden belonging to King Hans of Denmark was anchored off the coast of Sweden, but burned and sank while he was ashore. 500 years later, archaeologists have salvaged a pantry stocked with well preserved spices. Not bad for a 500+ year old ship that burned before it sank. Several pictures of how well preserved these spices are. I'd actually like to bite into a few of these peppercorns. They look like they are still full of flavor:
