Brought out quite a bit of detail. The date looks like 1866 or 1869. Bucket Lister and glad I got to show more detail. Thanks Erik from NJ. Happy Hunting!!!
Just posted before pictures with the after ketchup soak pics. I could barely make it out before the ketchup soak. And definitely couldn’t see the 5 before.
Heinz Ketchup
I soaked it in ketchup in a snack bag for 2 hours. Cleaned with water and dried. I repeated this process 3 times, using new bags and new ketchup each time. So this clean I did took 6
hours.
It’s the mild amount of vinegar in the ketchup that does the cleaning I think. From experience, DONT soak coins in straight vinegar! It’ll eat them up pretty quick.

H. J. Heinz didn't volunteer for the Union Army when other men his age were serving, but that was a long time ago :laughing7:

Congrats on your restoration results Randy, the fact that you were able to restore any of the detail is a great thing.

Personally, I refuse to use any H.J. Heinz products in our house, primarily because in 2014 they closed their tomato plant in Southwestern Ontario putting over 700 people out of work! :BangHead:

"H.J. Heinz Co. will close its Leamington, Ont., processing plant in June 2014, costing 740 people their jobs, the company announced Thursday. It broke the news to its employees at a meeting in the cafeteria. Leamington Mayor John Paterson called the news "a great disappointment." The plant, which is more than 100 years old, is Leamington's largest employer. "This is a day we hoped would never come," Paterson said. "We deeply regret this news." John Skocza has worked at Heinz in Leamington since 1978. "I’d like to thank Warren Buffet for doing this to Canada. He just crushed us," Skocza said on the way out of the meeting. Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway and its partner on the deal — 3G Capital – bought Heinz for $28 billion US in February.

Heinz closed three plants in North America on Thursday, including Florence, SC (200 employees); Pocatello, ID (410 employees); and, Leamington, ON in Canada (740 employees). In a statement, Heinz said it came to its decision "after an extensive review of our company’s North American supply chain footprint, capabilities, and capacity utilization."

I never knew the bad stuff about Heinz the Company. I will make sure to get another brand, such as Hunts. If I would’ve known that the Company was so controversial and degrading, I definitely wouldn’t have used their ketchup, or posted me using it on a Shield Nickel. Thank You ANTIQUARIAN for the education about the company and what it has done to American workers. Definitely a Bad taste in My mouth now. Happy Hunting!!!

I think your beef is with Warren Buffet (can't stand the guy myself).

Shield nickles don't come up very often.Congrats.

Thank you for sharing..WTG. Another great hunt

Great find brother! Congrats. Found my first V nickel today, bad shape. Olive oil helped some, may try the ketchup trick!

You should of used French's Ketchup-no strike that there's probably ketchup baggage with that brand also. :tongue3:

Nice results in getting a tad more detail.

I avoid Heinz products due to the fact I was a broker for Hunts ( ConAgra) a few years ago and it became a habit of sorts. However, if you mix Hellman’s mayonnaise and Frank’s hot sauce you’ll never miss it. I also think Heinz ketchup is the best tasting, but every time I see it, I think of the Massachusetts grown assclown John Kerry so it’s easy to avoid (; just sayin’.
Nice job on the nickel RJ, I’ve only ever found 5 shield nickels, 3 were horribly toasted, 2 were in pretty good shape probably because they were very deep and on a well drained hill.

Wow Joe-Dirt! That pair of shields came out of the ground Nice! It may be the soil in this area because everyone around here have to try pretty hard the get the detail to show at all. Usually all you see is the 5 and lines of the shield.
