This was a couple of weeks ago, but just getting to share now…

Being in FL for a few months I wanted to learn how to metal detect the beaches…specifically for older things like 1770’s Spanish anything…so I took a very interesting 8 week class with Terry Shannon who has been quite successful on the Treasure Coast. It was a fun and interesting class and he is a down to earth character with good stories.

My husband showed me a Facebook post about someone who lost her gold and diamond heart (which belonged to her deceased mom) somewhere at a specific beach. I figured I would give it a try. After going up and down for half an hour or so, I picked up a gold chain and lo and behold it had a heart on it with diamonds. I was so thrilled as some of my past attempts to recover lost items were not successful…and the beach is a pretty large place for a small coil…not to mention what the tides may have done to move it.

I contacted her on facebook, and a couple days later there was a happy reunion. She had generously offered a large reward but as many of you have experienced, returning a find is reward enough when the recipient is so happy and grateful!

It’s a great hobby and I was happy to find more than pull tabs, bottle caps, and aluminum can pieces and reunite this personal keepsake to its owner, Meredith.

After finding the necklace, I played a bit longer and found a St. Benedict themed cross that was pretty interesting!

It was a fun day.

Very Nice!!! Good Job!!! Congrats!!!

That is a truly wonderful thing you did there. The fact that you took it upon yourself after learning about the loss, without being asked, to go searching, and then actually finding and returning the necklace deserves some special award above honorable mention. Well done.

Where and how did you find Terry's course? I live here on the Treasure Coast and don't know anything about it.

Thanks…Finding it was a gift in itself but I appreciate your kind words!

Hi Sandog,

Well, it was kind of by accident. First I met another detectorist, Corinne, who I chatted with and she reminded me about the local detectorist and author, Terry whom I met a year before on the beach and she was friends with him. I friended him on facebook. It was then that he posted about a class he was teaching at Holy Name of Jesus parish not far from me. It was sponsored through the Shepherd’s Center which offered multiple 8 week classes for seniors. The cost was $20.00 for as many classes as you want to sign up for!..I missed the first class…and the last class was canceled due to a few covid positive folks..but it was very interesting. He plans on teaching again next year..which is volunteer based for him. Maybe I’ll see you next year! I would listen to him again! So nice and down to earth and he has found lots of history…which is what interests me. I am less interested in the modern finds but he inspired me to look for history in FL. So far no luck for me in that respect, but I have found a few rings..including a “ring spill” of 4 sterling rings!
