I went out today to what I thought was a colonial site and found some cool things. I went through a 30 foot long field of thorns up to my neck until I reached open woods. A little bit into the hunt I got my first signal and dug, a nice watch fob pops out of the dirt. I happily put it in my find pouch. Five feet away I got another signal, a mid tone on my metal detector, this time a gilded two piece button. Around 10 feet away I got another mid tone, I dug and in the dirt on the side of the hole I saw a nickel. I picked it up and saw that it was not that corroded and looked to be pretty old. I nervously flipped it over and saw a big "P" on top of Monticello. I finally found my second silver coin, my first was on April 13, 2013, almost exactly two years ago. What are the chances of that?! I tried some more and never found anything else very cool except some weird clothes rivet thing which was in a grassy patch next to the car that I tried before leaving. The funniest part of the hunt is when I saw that I never had to have gone through the thorns in the first place! I left through some metal gate that took me back to the area where the parking lot was.

Anyways, the fob is pretty cool, some research shows that it is from 1909. It says, "National Sportsman" with a pop-out deer on the front and some cool writing on the back. The war nickel cleaned up nice and is 1943p, it does not look to be the rare 1943/2 variety though. Also, the button is gilded a weird printed design and an iron back.

Good hunt there, always like finding a old watch fob, today I got a watch, maybe tomorrow its fob will show up to go with it, if lucky

Lol! We make things harder for ourselves than it has to be sometimes! Hope you don't have too many scratches.

Nice finds! Cool fob! Congrats! Maybe the rivet will have an interesting past.

Nice finds. I'd almost swear somebody else found a National Sportsman fob a week or two ago. Or one very close to that.

Are you near Attleboro? very cool.

Nice digs. Fob are cool finds.

Nice finds, I love the fob.

Love anything watch related. This is a turn of the century fob when they were located on federal street.THis fob was given away when you sent in 25 cents in coin or stamps for a 3 month trial subscription. Nice Find "for lovers of sport rods dogs rifles and guns" !!

Thanks for the info, it makes the find so much cooler when I know it's story. I'm guessing with a little research I could find the magazine online.

very cool fob

My dad found one of those fobs about 15 years ago on an old house site on his property . They must have made quite a few of them . Pretty cool.

I'm shocked that's only your second silver bud.,you've found some beautiful old coppers. You'll find some Spanish soon my friend. That was a good day

Thanks, I hope to find some colonial silver soon. Colonial finds are already coming out of the dirt this year so I'm hoping that I will find my first colonial silver this year. I went out to a nice overgrown colonial place where I found some colonial coppers including my William III 1696 Halfpenny and the only silver find from last year, my colonial silver shoe buckle. I found an 1884 V-Nickel, which I'm pretty sure was dropped by a hunter after the original settlement was long gone, and a cool ornate colonial copper thing. That place is completely thawed now and there are no annoying ferns like there are in the summer, I hope I can recover some nice things there this month before it gets overgrown again.

Anyways, Thanks :)
