Good Afternoon T-Netters-
I was able to get out yesterday afternoon for a quick hunt in some local woods that have produced some Colonial era finds in the past. I wasn't expecting much, but you never know. After about 2 hours, I called it a day. I was happy to find a very slick large copper, a flat button, and what what I thought was another flat button. The second "button" was odd in that there was no evidence of a shank, and it featured a crown emblem over a letter "C".

I was very puzzled by this second "button". It was quite thin, weighing only 1.4 g, with a diameter of about 22 mm. After a fruitless search on Google, I posted a picture of it in the " What is it" forum.

A huge " Thank you" to DCMatt who came up with a positive ID. Turned out that my "button" was a French West Indies 2 Sols coin. These were minted between 1779-1797. Needless to say, I'm more than thrilled.

What a neat find!
I would have thought button myself, had I found it I probably would have exhausted hours searching buttons for a match.
Well done Matt on the id!
Cool stuff!

A 1700's French Indies coin found in New England - how cool is that - congrats ! :hello2:

really cool coin and saves, wtg man

Great find. I love seeing dug examples of the various foreign coins that were in circulation during our country’s early years. How about that “What is it Forum”? What a great resource. Hats off to DC Matt for the ID. Congrats!
