Barber Quarter. 1906. Sorry but it was a poor design in my opinion and all the Barbers I have dug were well worn out. At least I had the satisfaction of scratching the back of the one today. Still have mudballs from yesterdays digs, I'll find out what's in the clumps sometime this year or next. I have mud everywhere. And I mean everywhere.

I did get 3 Civil War era buttons and 5 colonial era ones today. No pics, just started addressing all the mud. I haven't dug everything out of the car yet.

OK, New Guy questions.....what is a mud ball? Is it just mud you bring home from the site and go through later??

Seriously?? Wow. I have never heard that before. I think it is such a beautiful coin. You must get colonial silver all the time because I have never ever heard of someone that isn't happy with a barber quarter. I know many people dying for their first.

The Barbers I have found have all been worn out. So they didn't look too good. I guess for some reason I didn't picture "Liberty" as a guy. When they're mint, they are nice looking but I have rarely seen any mint looking ones out there.

Sandchip, I had a very, very good year. Lot of silver, but I like relics and colonial better and hate to say it, I don't have a coin collection.

You can always send them to me lol Then I could get rid of my pull tab collection.

blk hole, what I was referring to as a mud ball is as such: The ground was frozen down two inches. It has a high clay content, so freezed hard and tight. We had to use small picks to get into the ground. Some of the relics were frozen in icy mud balls. We had to let the frozen dirt balls thaw out to get the relics out of them, to keep from accidentally getting damaged if we tried to remove them from the frozen dirt.

Smokey thanks for the explanation

And now it looks like it will be weeks before any kind of thaw. Will be 8 degrees here Monday night. HOWEVER, even with temps low at night the salt water beaches can still produce. Even though the "dry" sand areas are frozen, that kind of frozen is quickly smashed open with a common rock hammer or small hand mattock. I've done it before. Sand can be frozen down a foot and since it is not tightly packed, is pretty easy to get through. I do prefer it to be above 40 with little wind for such an excursion however.

Being silver the lowly Barber can only be despised so much. Maybe it is just boring. I'm guessing the Barber years were the only ones they used the same design on dime, quarter and half-dollar? Someone help me here. In all fairness the shield nickel is far homelier.

Actually the Seated Liberty years, and a 1878 Carson City can be worth $65,000 they were used on dime quarter half and dollar

oh and also the Bust dollars used on dime quarter half and dollar It wasn't until after the Barber they they were all different designs, the Morgan dollars started in 1878

I do like the look fo the capped busts, and finally found my first two this past weekend. One is toast, the other is very, very nice.

Yes I will take all your stupid finds if it helps you. I will be happy to step up. :laughing9:
Great find

I have jug of silver I should probably take to the coin dealer. Mostly mercs and roosevelts.

Just so you know, Liberty is female. It is kind of tough to tell on the Barber series but it is a she.
