a relative of mine lives in a back area.somewhat close to several area junk yards. it seems to be a favorite area for people to dump cars. if i am ABSOLUTLYY CERTIAN, that the car is abandoned i will grab parts off it and look for minor valuables under the seats in trunk if open etc. i look for windows broke out tires or other parts already missing and no liscense plate.anyone else doing this? ever had problems with law enforcement over it?

I have to agree Unfortunately

Stolen Vehicles and Abandond Vehicles look the same.
The Serial # Must first be searched & The original owner gets
at least 30 Days (Depending on State, maybe more) to Respond before any vehicle is Considered Abandond.

If it is abandoned own your property you have certain legal rights. contact your state for the process to obtain a title for the vehicle. This generally takes about 60 days from start to finish and cost less than $100.00,but don't take anything until you have title in hand.

If the vehicle in question is truly junked and has been there for quit awhile another thing to consider is to recover the catalytic converter. Which has value for it's platinum 2004 they were going for $5-$20 depending on the size, but you would have to check to see if some recycling yards in your area takes them. Use a portable Dewalt or any reciprocating saw for removal. Feels good to turn trash into money.

Might be a good idea to check and see who owns the land. Get the VIN # and have a local law enforcement agency run the number to make sure it isn't stolen...Then if it comes back ok, ask the guy who owns the property if you can get parts but he might say the only way to get the parts is to take the whole shooting match to get it off his property.
