Are the normal head phones that come with the detector adequate for hunting in the surf?

they can be used for wading...beyond that adequate

You’re good until the control box is submerged, then no Bluetooth signal

They work fine.....until you drop them in the water or get hit by a big wave. I'd get the waterproof wired ones to be safe.
