African baskets, but for what?

I was told these are from Africa, but I can't figure out what they are used for. Any ideas?

I lived in East Africa as a child and saw a lot of interesting baskets- the Masai women carry all kinds of stuff around, balanced on their heads.

Unfortunately I have no idea what those would be used for- they certainly don't look like any I've seen. The style does look African, though.

I was thinking the same thing! I have seen old film where the men of a certain tribe wear those and even tie a string to the end of them and tie the other end around their neck. I suppose it protects them from the briars, etc in the bush or perhaps some ritual thing? If it were an American use, all the guys would want the really big ones! Monty
