Relic Hunting
Went back to the new site after work today.
Wednesday evening I only dug 2 plain flat buttons, so I took Thursday off.
Sure am glad I went back today.

I had a dinner date tonight, and I was only supposed to hunt for 1.5 hours.
I wasn't finding much, so I kept going.
Right around the 2 hour mark I dug another silver cob, and had to go.
Looks like I will be heading back in the morning.

This one is a Phillip 5 weighing at 1.9 grams. It is the largest half real cob I have ever dug.
For a minute I thought I had a 1R, nope just a big 1/2R

I also think I might have found an old Brass bowl/dinner plate. It is 6-1/4" wide and about an inch deep.
It was in a hole that might be a trash pit. There was a bottom of an old black glass bottle in the hole, some bricks, and lots of pieces of glass.
This was dug in the same area my flat buttons, and Script I pewter came out of.
Could it be an 1812 ish era dinner bowl? Older? Newer?

Congrats on your latest addition in the silver Cob division.:occasion14:
The brass bowl is one really cool relic.

Weird that you seem to be finding mostly 1/2 real cobs and that they are slightly overweight. I have a cob that weighs around 1.9 grams as well

Thanks Pepper. I really hope I can find out more about the bowl.

Well, I wish they were bigger. I have dug 13 cobs and all of them were small.

13 from one site. That sounds like a lot of fun no matter the size. Any cob is a great find and over 1 real size is pretty rare. Im still waiting as well

No, I wish. 8 from one site, and 1 not far away. This site has given up 4. Seems the early colonists in my area really liked their Spanish Silver. 12 were Mexico City and had the King Phillip V or Charles II half real monogram on the back. I keep wishing I could get a 1R, 2R or a big 8R. I'm not going to complain. I suppose a 1/2R cob was a lot of money back then. Kind of like how most old sites give up way more half dimes than big silver. Me and a buddy had an early 1800s site where we dug about 10 half dimes, one seated dime, and nothing larger.

Congratualtions on the nice cob! :occasion14:

Welcome to the COB club! :icon_thumleft:

Man you are on fire !! That bowl is bad arse. And another cob !!! How many is that ?? I mean in the last month you must have about 3-4 plus all the other great stuff !! Put all 13 cobs in that bad arse bowl and take a pic for me and post it. Wow !! What a rich site. Congrats on a great summer !!

Thanks Bart. These kind of sites don't come along very often in my area. It has been one heck of an exciting ride. I hope that bowl is as old as I think it might be.
That would make for a really neat pic. I may try to do that tomorrow afternoon.
Thanks again Bud.

Great saves; though I would have guessed the cob is older; perhaps a Felipe III (1609-1620), like this one:

Don.......
Thanks Don. I always thought the Pv$ was Phillip V.
The photo you linked does look like mine. I'm not really sure how to even tell the difference.
Most of my cobs have the Pv$. Maybe I need you to look at all of mine.
My site dates to the 1720's, so I just always thought Phillip V fit well with the site, but I have dug earlier relics and coins at these type of sites.
I found this sketch of a Phillip V a couple years ago, and that is what I based my conclusion on.

If it does turn out to be a Felipe III, that would even be better.

Be glad its cobs. Up here the older sites are littered with British coppers but few Spanish silvers. At least the sites Ive found

Might have to change your name to "cobpicker"! I bet it never gets old digging those, and I'm hoping there's a nice big fat one there for you.

Still looking for my 1st cob, so any size will do, but who won't dream for an 8.
I hope this site continues a little longer, because I know how hard it will be to move on from this.

Congrats on the cob

Man oh man are you on fire. The shape and look of that cob is especially nice. Keep it up. Youre finding cobs like Mercs at an old school! And that bowl/plate is excellent. :occasion14:

Thanks J. I hope so too.

Thanks GW. I hope it keeps up. Not sure about the bowl. Wish I could find some similar examples. It does appear to be old, and was found in the right area.
