Oftentimes I quietly chuckle to myself when I hear on the forums "there was never a home in that field, don't waste your time detecting it."

I hope a lot of people listen to the inaccurate advice these folks dispense because it's going to leave a lot more for me.

Case in point

I just found this neat old matchbox with matches still inside. This was in the same field where I found the four Barber quarter pocket spill. I don't think I've ever found another matchbox.
I can only wonder who it was that packed those matches in there that morning on the way out to the field which is where farmers practically spent their whole lives. And when he went to light his home rolled cigarette he found out his matchbox was gone.

kewl !!! Theres a 40 acre patch of woods beside my house that I know for a fact was a farmers fields in the 1860's. Who really knows what was were we detect 150 years ago, unless its a preserved location. I do my own research and go from there. I have found too many things in the oddest of places.

I absolutely love going where there's no documented dwellings! I have spent lots of time this summer searching random river banks that have history around them. I've found Spanish silver, seated dime, nice old coppers and a very old pistol barrel. I always enjoy going where most don't bother with. There is great stuff everywhere!

Nice digs and thanks for the pics

very cool find, back then those matches were very important and they and the box were missed pretty quickly

neat find,The first thought that would have went through my mind is "old coins inside:tongue11:"very neat piece!

I love the looks of bewilderment on people's faces when I tell them my oldest finds come from fields. That box is a very nice find and the matches inside make it even better.

I can't wait for Frank and I and/or others to help going back to the Duck River behind my home's ridge top and MD S. and N. of the ridge top where I'm sure a ferry(s) operated. It's near Natchez Trace and Civil War activity. It would be great to see what we find. So much area to cover though.

Sounds like that would be a blast.I would imagine could find allot of old money at a place like a ferry crossing.Allot of money should have exchanged hands there ,not to mention civil war relics.Hope you guys do well!
