all i know is that it's copper and

found this today its fairly heavy copper was down about 6 inches. does not have threads, it's hollow. any clues as to what it is or how old it is?

Although it looks red, it is brass, not copper. It is a finial, apparently seperated at the braze, and could be to any number of objects, antique foreplace tool, andiron, something of that kind. It is unlikely it was a finial to a clock as it is kind of squat with a more rounded look. It would help a little to know the dates of other objects nearbye?

I agree with johnnyi as to it being some kind of finial. It could have been burnt causing it to be red another reason might be the metal content. Before electricity was invented copper was considered a junk metal and older brass will contain more copper than modern brass.

i found one like that years ago i think i was told it's to a post on a brass

i found it up by that barn that could date back to 1800's. near jonesboro wich was inc. in 1818
