Had a couple of hours to hunt the other day and thought I would drive about a half hour south to hunt in the hope the ground wasn't frozen solid in the woods. Had a spot I picked out a few months ago that I never got to. Met my friend Charles over there and thought we'd give it a shot. It's right next to a stream and not far from the site of an old mill. Hit the woods and found there was a lot of trash. After about 15 minutes got a good signal and low and behold it was an 1864 2 Cent piece. It's only the 3rd 2 cent piece I've found in 35 years. I had found my second about 6 months ago and the first one was more than 30 years ago. They only made them for a short period of time and it seems they didn't circulate much. Although the 1864 is one of the most common dates I was happy to find it. Considering what it looked like when I pulled it out of the ground it didn't clean up too bad. Ended up pulling a 1907 Indian too which was also pretty poor looking coming out of the ground. Only found 2 coins, but at least they weren't clad or memorials.

Those are both great. Would love to find 'em.

Great saves. 2 in six months, you're on a roll now! Congrats. After the US coinage act of 1864, that was the first coin with the motto " In God We trust" Cool piece of American history!

Thanks. That a great fact about In God We Trust that few people know. Now, do you know what the first use of "E Pluribus Unum" was?

Nice digs....I would luv to dig one of those

Nice going on the 2 cent, looking like it's in better shape than the IH.

Considering the time of year you're just lucky to be able to get out and find a place to hunt that's not all frozen. Then to go out and find a 2 center....wow! Looking, it seems the 2 center cleaned up nicer then the IH did which is a bonus. Congratulations!

The first coins with E pluribus unum were dated 1786 and struck under the authorization of the State of New Jersey by Thomas Goadsby and Albion Cox in Rahway, New Jersey.

Very good Rob! Most people don't know that. Here's a picture of a NJ I found about a month ago. Now, what about the first use of the word "cent"?

great coins, figure they become more special when you find them so more rarely, congrats

Very nice Don. They both look really good to me. Congrats!

Nice find Don! I really want to pull one of those out someday.

Congrats

Two beatuies, that'd make my day!
Great scores

Very nice Don. One of my first coins was a 2 center. Surprised yours cleaned up as well as it did.

Sweet! Most people don't even know there was a US 2 cent coin. They are even more shocked to be told there was a 3 cent coin also.

I'm one of those, Underminer. Until I started detecting, i didn't know there was 1/2, 2, 3, or 20 cent coins minted. The part of this hobby I love so much, learning about our history!!!

Silver is pretty, but there's something about that beautiful green of an early copper that just makes me smile. Congrats on a couple of nice ones.

I've had lots of coins. Only three, two centers. One was in excellent condition.
Yet, somehow, this is one of my favorite coins. The design, I think.

Very nice!

There are also a lot of people who are not aware of a $3 or $4 gold piece. Then you can get into paper money where the denominations really get wild. Here's a colonial $4 bill from my collection that's hand signed by JB Smith who signed the Articles of Confederation.
