An amazing Saturday in the field!

We managed to get a full day of digging in today! Went to a field we haven’t been to before recent rain meant the walking and digging were easier than it has been, got a great mix of lead, musket balls, crotal bell, buttons, a 1860 penny and some items we have no clue about, the huge lead shield shaped object weighs in at 1 kg 371 g… the small folded bit of lead has lines over it… and the bent piece of metal is tapered looks very blade like 🤔 … as ever any ids much appreciated! Xx

Medieval Lead Trade weight with 3 Lions on it.

The picture that has the 2 Ring Things (as Cru'dad & I call them), many debates & uses, main one was Medieval Horse Harness Loops.
Under them are 2 Victorian Stair Rod Holders that held the strip of carpet down on the stairs/steps.
To the right of them is a broken Barrel Tap Key (18th/19th C)

That folded bit of lead grabbed my attention because of its markings. I wonder if it was a pagan offering or curse, similar to a witches curse. They have been folding lead & making offerings & curses since the Roman Times but I suspect yours is Medieval. A friend of mine found some with preserved human hair in it. He didn't like it & we donated it to the Museum.


The symbols are similar to some of the above examples.

Awesome stuff, AS USUAL! Where, in general, do you hunt? My family is mostly from Cornwall I believe. I especially like the ancient pull tabs. It does look as if there is a circle etched inside the folded lead. Guess you are going to have to unfold it eventually. Please post followup pics when you do. While the inside is very much like the witchy stuff, the first thing I thought about the outside was a map. Keep an eye out for Excalibur.

Ah thank you! We are in the East Midlands bit of the uk. Lots of amazing historic stuff around us, so very lucky! Ha, I don’t know if we dare unfold it now 😱 but if we do will def post pics! xx

Well done once again
The trade weight is a very nice example, and a heavy one at that.

Liking the folded piece of lead-the history of those times is dark, but also fascinating.
One has to wonder the why, when, by who, for of such a find.
Quite opposite of a love token thrown into the field, that's for sure.
Then again it might of been the love of the belief that the thrower was casting upon-or casting off.
(Need to anneal it a tad to make it soft to unfold the hidden secret within)

Great day out still that has unearthed and saved a good chunk of history.

Really cool, and INTERESTING. Hope you can take it and the "white crusty powder stuff" (spooky) for an expert opinion on this one. Got to be a good story behind this piece. This may be your banner find.

I concur with the medieval horse harness loops. Almost impossible to identify with 100 percent certainty, but that’s what we call them in the Baltic States/Russia.

The white stuff is just corrosive build up. We will never know for sure if the individual intended harm or good fortune, but we do know they took the time to carve in a pattern and fold it for a reason.
