I spent about an hour hunting today at one of my spots close to home. Im wondering if this eagle buckle is military related. The style of the eagle kinda tells me it is, but I dont remember ever seeing one posted :icon_scratch: it also seems as though its condition is most likely from a fire.
The little round tigers head is probably from a brooch of some sort, and if im not mistaken :icon_scratch: the eyes seem to be rubys, once I ran some water over it they lit right up, and close inspection with a loupe shows no scratches of blemishes at all, maybe ill take it to a jeweler when I get a chance. ...any info on this buckle is more then welcome.
thanks, & enjoy,
Pro-

I'm thinking that plate is pre civil war militia. VERY COOL :headbang: :headbang:

Looks like A plow got it the other half has to be near I would go back!!

Neat finds...I agree with baywalker about going back to find the other half.

That is a nice Militia plate. Too bad it is damaged. It is listed in the Sydney C. Kerksis buckle book as militia circa 1810 and of the general 1812 period. It has a rarity of 8. I am sure it was made for the war of 1812. If you have the book or can get a copy it is figure 165 on page 171. You really need to get back in their and find the other half. Also the lions head item you found, I have seen similar loins head on British buckles that were imported to the states but can't seem to find it in my reference books. I do know that some of the lions head buckles have been found in Confederate sites although I am sure that the one you found is much earlier. Maybe you will be able to do more research and find out what you have.

This plate had a wad of melted brass stuck to it, it all crumbled off soon after it came out of the ground. Im pretty sure this plate melted in a fire, the pieces of brass were totaly unrecognizable.
So I saved what I could, filled in my hole and moved on......... 8 for rarity?...not bad.
thanks for the info, that book is on my list now
