This artifact was found on a friend’s land about 20 minutes away from the Grand Canyon in AZ. Apparently he’d found some pottery fragments there in the past as well from early Puebloan peoples.

The rock is flat on one side and rounded on the other. One edge has some flake marks on it, which shows at least some definite working. What’s interesting is that the flat side has some interesting ring patterns in the rock.

The rock itself is possibly a sort of chert or flint. It could be similar to the stuff some folks call “zebra flint”, though not an exact match.

My question is, is this just a discarded bit of worked material? Or did the patterns in the rock have some meaning to the Native Americans? Maybe they broke it open and kept the pattered rock as some kind of keepsake or effigy?
