Primary Interest:
All Treasure Hunting
Recently I was given the opportunity to interview Hunter-X, one of the most successful treasure hunters who ever walked the planet. Finding him wasn't easy and once we sat down for the interview it was easy to understand why. Sometimes it seemed as though his answers were in secret code, other times it seemed as though he was toying with me. I guess I would have to say that he is elusive even when cornered.

Q- Why have you remained in the darkness all these years?
A- It's the difference between a penny and a dollar. People will walk right past a penny laying on the ground but everyone will stop to pickup a dollar.

Q- Why do you keep pursuing the hobby?
A- Metal detecting keeps me in shape. I get to it every morning just as soon as I've had my morning doughnut and cigarette.

Q- You've never been a fan of water hunting. Why?
A- I've never water hunted. Most items fall right through it.

Q- What's the secret to finding gold?
A- There is no secret to finding gold. You just have to look where gold can be found.

Q- What's the most expensive thing you've ever found?
A- The most expensive thing I've ever found? That would be my ex-wife. I'm still paying for that discovery.

Q- Any advice on choosing a machine?
A- Choosing a machine setup is like choosing a golf club. Swing the wrong one and you're probably not going to score as well.

Q- Sharks, you say you no longer fear them.
A- Sharks? I use to fear them but since I lost the leg I figure the odds are the same as lightening striking twice in the same place.

Q- Tell me about scoops.
A- Scoops? They each serve a purpose. I pick my teeth with a toothpick. I clean my ears with a Q-tip. I pick my nose with my finger. Pretty simple selection process.

Q- Have you ever found the mother-lode?
A- Yes. And from the size of the pile I'm guessing a bear.

Q- Do you ever give your equipment pet names?
A- I had a pin pointer once that I named, Spot.

Q- Why have you always hunted alone?
A- I seldom hunt alone. There's nearly always other people on the beach.

Q- Do you hide your finds from view?
A- I always hide my finds from view. At my age discovering them a second time is just as rewarding.

Q- Have you ever gotten lost?
A- I've gotten lost several times in just one lost.

Q- When you look back on your life what do you see?
A- When I look back on my life I see a lot of change. Pennies mostly.

Q- And what about a secret pursuit? That one special treasure trove you know is out there and waiting?
A- I can tell you where one huge treasure is at for sure. But in keeping with tradition I have to die first.

And with this we concluded the interview. Now I could tell you where Hunter-X is hiding out these days but I've been sworn to secrecy. All I can tell is that ten minutes after the interview was over he was quickly heading to the beach with a detector and scoop in his hands. Could be your beach. Could be you've seen him and you never even knew it. I will tell you this about Hunter-X, he doesn’t look anything like what you might imagine.
