I hunt Civil War relics around Atlanta. My question for other 800 users what type of analysis do you use on deep targets before deciding to dig. I have a few and maybe can learn some more.
Is it iron? ok may be a shell or pistol.
does it ring up like a CW belt buckle?
try to get an idea of the size with the heel and toe method that I find better than the pin pointing feature for some reason.
is it a steady signal? within 2 numbers
if it is big, jumpy and TID's other than iron range I suspect it is a tin can.
Another trick is a 1/4" iron probe sharpened 30" with a T handle. This will punch right through a can and not heavy iron like a shell frag, shell or pistol. you can also tell the outline of the item by probing.
An old experienced detectorist many years ago had one of these. I had a machine shop make one up for me for $15 (things were cheaper back then).
With a little experience you can ignore cans except those filled with coins, ignore rocks, and roots. All make a different type vibration than iron and coins in a compact cache. Not good on coin spills.
I would be interested about any tricks you may have with the 800. Thanks
