I would estimate that most 2 Box units are stuffed in closets or sold shortly after purchase.
The reason being they are completely manual and hard to adjest, plus they react differently from conventional detectors. First off they are really two separate units electrically. The transmitter, the rear unit is very basic. You turn it on and it transmits. some have batterycheck VU meters, but that's it. The front, receiver is the big problem to most. Mine is a Hays unit that has 3 controlls on the receiver. An on/off switch, a sensitivy knob, and a 3 position switch. The switch has, bat. test, low power, and high power. It has a meter that shows bat. voltage and receiver signal strength. Then there is the adjustment that stumps most users. On mine it is called the "A" knob. this is a knob that holds the receiver to the main shaft, BUT it is the alignment adjustment. The trans. / recrive. coils must be perpendicular to null out the direct reception of the signal,But this null must be set slightly off in actual operation.
My detector is capable of picking up a .50 cal. ammo box at 12' IN ANY DIRECTION. If the box is 2' or more down in the ground I will pick up a constant signal when over it , but if the ammo. box is on the ground , I will pick up an increasing signal as I approach it and a decreasing signal as I pass it. This is what through most off. I also only use the low sensitivy position on the receiver.
Hope this helps you guys with the 2 Box units in your closets. Frank
