Anchor button ID please.

My digging buddy found a button this morning which I drafted 1st chance I got. I'm hoping it's military (navy). I wasted no time breaking the shank off on my trip home ..}; I'm pretty sure this is a firmiliar button to this forum & would appreciate any insight. Found about an hour north of Toronto. Area has war of 1812 history if that means anything. Thanks for looking.

Neat Button and assortment of finds. need a better pic of the back and possible backmark for id.
Your button looks like a 2 piece, but its hard to tell from the photos. I think most 1812 era buttons were 1 piece/flat buttons.
Also try posting it in the What is it section.

It appears your button is a 2 piece which would date from the mid 1800s at the earliest. Does the back appear rusted in person? My gut is that it is a 20th century naval or blazer button. Still a great assortment of finds

Cool link bonepicker & yes vmiairpwr the back is very rusty. Good calls on it being a two piece. That's something I didn't consider. If it's 20th century then it's the most recent thing I've ever found there. Most of the European stuff coming out of there tends to be mid 1800's based on coin dates anyway.

Not to dimish your digs but yes, the rusty steel back is a dead giveaway for a more recent blazer button, probably 1920s. Keep hitting it and I'm sure you'll find your 1812 button next time.

Is the back on that one solid, or do the holes go all the way through? It almost looks like you can get that crust off but I can't tell if it's rusted too.

That's one of the few buttons I've attempted to clean. Wanted to see if has writing on the back, but man that stuff's really on there! I'll have to try again soon. The holes do not go right through & as far as I can tell it also appears to be a two piece I think.

Yes both are civilian, similar period, early 1900s.

I agree with the others; the first button looks to be a civilian fouled-anchor blazer button. I have found several civilian "Navy" buttons, but never a fouled-anchor one.

Even though it turned out to not be military, its a nice looking button. When you start finding more, they display in cases very nicely.
