Please help me ID these ancient coins! My grandfather passed away and left me his coin collection, which is mostly American besides these.

The reverse on the smaller coin is vey encrusted, but the reverse on the larger one, if the photo shows it, has what appears to be a figure holding a staff.

Can you repost the pics to show all the heads at the top of the coin?
I don't know how to do that from my side.

Hi mackaydon,

I’m not sure what you mean by heads besides the face, but I’ll attach some better photos. Do you mean the letters?

They are Roman.
Can you now turn the reverse images 90 degrees to the left and repost?
Thanks, Don in SoCal
Thank you!

The reverse of the smaller one is hopelessly encrusted but the reverse of the larger one seems to be a standing figure facing left(?) and holding a spear/staff. I can make out “A**A” on it.

Here’s some with other lighting.

Bare-legged gods (male only) holding a spear in their left hand include Jupiter, Neptune and Virtus.

And 'big-headed' Roman coins were most frequently minted between the years 284-340 AD.
That would narrow the search to ten emperors.

Thank you so much! I’ll start researching from those parameters and post what I find.

The big-headed coin may also contain the description: laureate, draped and cuirassed.
Note also the legend extends over the head which will eliminate other candidate coins.
