Ancient Coin?

I found this coin/token/whatsit around a dam site that dates back about 150 years. It is definitely something I have never seen. The picture shown is enlarged by 50 per cent. Any help on identifying this item would be greatly appreciated. Thank you much.

This is the reverse of this item. The scratches were on it, not my doing. Does this help??
