Its a fairly small part about 1/4 of an inch thick, roughly 2 inches square as the scale shows ,,little part of something, pretty heft for a tiny thing!

If half of it is missing ? We used to use a similar tool to put in a cows nostrils to allow us to give the animal worm medicine. Won't know until you get the crud off....I worked as a gun smith for a few years on old weapons and cannot remember anything like this , unless it had a solid metal grip...Hope This will help or trigger another memory on another old timer.:) tailfeathers

I have consulted the bible of Gun Parts..................The Dixie Gun Works Catalog.......................while it looks very similar to a hammer assembly of a couple early pistols... mainly.... Starr (1858 & 1863) ...... the lack of any holes to bolt or pin the hammer into place for assembly makes it seem unlikely......... Most of the hammer assemblies pictured have a couple of holes with a few exceptions..... One of them being flintlocks which isn't even close to matching....... Not all models are pictured and the possibility exist that it is in fact a hammer assembly, but I have some doubts that it is...... This is only one readers opinion......................
