At first glance, I would assume an Agate; but it seems to have banding similar to a very unique mineral called "Rhodochrosite".

Any more info or possibly clearer photos of the "finish" of the specimen?

Awesome! Try any get good lighting and possibly a flashlight (high power or L.E.D.). See if any areas are translucent. See if there is a "sheen" or "shine" to it.

Also, did you find it? If so, where about in the country are you located? Not trying to pry, it will help in identifying it though.

Gonna have to call ya on that BurntBear ~ What Nicko is holding is picture rock sandstone. A sedimentary rock. If there's a large deposit of it and it has good hardness it makes an attractive ornamental stone.

Looks like wonderstone, but you usually find that in Utah ot Nevada. Its a very dense/hard dhyolite

Candy rhyolite. 98%
I was invited to a candy rhyolite claim in Truth Or Consequences NM last spring and had a ball. Most rhyolite isn't all that interesting being more uniform w/o patterns of color. This stuff makes very interesting jewelry.

Is it sandy feeling? I would have to say sandstone also if it is soft. I am no expert and come here to learn

Dense sandstones can be quite hard and take on very nice polishes. As to what its worth~ if it can be polished and cabbed a few bucks. Larger pieces could be shaped. Depends on the texture. Picture sandstones are usually valued for there aesthetic appeal and I've seen framed specimens sell for fair prices.

Here's the site of the guy that owns the claim where I found these. He's shows some nice stock. The cabs are a mystery to many as they are uncommon. I think they make outstanding cabs.

It sure is Burntbear. I just started finding all these nice rocks all around the property and figured i put them away. My parents, my wife and my kids think im crazy because of all the plastic totes full of rocks i have lol. I like something, i keep it lol
