Another Capped Bust 1/2 Dime & misc.

I found a capped bust a few weeks ago and tonight a friend of mine found this one hunting an old site with me. We had trouble finding the site at first and finally started hitting a little iron. I found a pewter button and some other flat-buttons but there wasn't much there to begin with. I told him if we found a coin, it would be an old one. She's chipped, worn, bent, scratched and dimpled but still a top-notch find for Michigan. I also added a picture of other recent finds in the last couple days and wondered if anyone knew what the relic at the bottom center was. It almost looks like it has a tab in the middle like a suspender clip but I haven't seen this before and I know it is old. The IHP's are 1864, 1865 and 1868. Thanks for looking and sorry for the bad lighting in the pics.

looks like a counterfeit to me, some of the ones I've seen posted here looked very real as far as details, but my bet is that's some kind of counterfeit

Nice old stuff! What caused the dimples? Heat from a fire? As small as those things are you think you would find more of them. DD

Ok... skepticism can be a healthy thing now and then. But a counterfeit half dime? Even I can do the math on that one. That one is as good as gold in my book.

skepticism? there were plenty of counterfeit halfdimes, they counterfeited halfpennys

there was a capped bust halfdime ctft posted about a month ago here and SEVERAL others in the last couple years.. the whole reason i thought ctft was the odd break. in no way was i trying to negate a find

Yeah its most certainly Counterfeit Here is the one I found a few weeks ago, I was sure it was real as well bu silver wont fracture like this Check out the detail on mine still a great find though!!!

THe "dimples" are from the pewter deteriorating from under the silver plating

Before you toss that counterfeit coin, ya might wanna bring it by a coin shop. Extreme heat can alter the normal chemical compostion of metals. I am certainly no expert on the topic. I'm not sayin' they're real or not, I'd just like to get to the bottom of this. By this time there was plenty of coinage available in the U.S. Not like the colonial days when coins were at a premium. From the detail evident on the photos posted, I'd think a counterfeit half dime of this quality would be unlikely. That said, I've been wrong before.

I don't know why anyone would toss a period counterfeit coin. I'm no expert on the topic myself, was only saying i'd seen counterfeits with more detail than this one, and the only reason I thought ctft to begin with was the odd break. You say a ctft halfdime of this quality would be unlikely, yet James just posted one with far more detail. Also, I never said it was for sure a ctft, that's just what it looks like from here.

Great eye Urm,that was my first impression as well.hard to tell,for sure.
One thing for sure is they counterfeited coins all the way up into the 20th cent.
Third....I would take a counterfeit one over a real one any day!!

After further review, in my opinion it is not counterfeit. We compared machine signals between this one and the one I recently found and they were the same. These better pictures show that it might have been in a fire which would explain the bubbles and the break Any more thoughts?

It's like you said earlier. They did counterfeit cents and half cents. These days that sounds nuts. But back then money had much more value. SIGH! Those were they days, huh? The bubbles? Well, I knew a girl named Bubbles once, and she... oh, forgot, family-oriented. Nice work, guys!
