Another handful of Civil War relics from my neighbor's place. 3 Bullets, 3 leather rivets, a nipple protector made from a round musket ball, and a percussion cap.
Very nice. Congrats!

Very Cool!!! Congrats!!!

What the heck is a nipple protector?
The term is actually "Cone Protector", but most people today call the cone a nipple, so... anyways, its a specific item that helps protect the cone/nipple from damage. Some were actual issued items, as in the pictures below, but they were easily lost so the soldiers would often fashion them from the bullets they already had with them. I have found quite a few over the years.

We had a "going away" party yesterday for Lou and Nancy, the neighbors whose property I have been hunting at the last couple months; they move away next week. Nancy gave me these, she said her ex-husband eyeballed them back in the 1970s and she hung onto them for 50 years. The button is a plain eagle; the minie balls still have dirt on them. I'm gonna miss these friends.

I guess the nipple protectors were really a type of safety. You could carry your gun loaded with a lesser chance of accidental discharge. Cock the hammer, drop the protector and you’re ready to shoot.
