Another New Prairie Flower

I was surprised to see 3 Culver's Root plants flowering in my prairie. First ones to pop. I looked in the book to ID them and couldn't find them under pink flower section. Found them in white flower section and it said they are rarely pink. So I got lucky on have the more rare color. Gary

I love wild flowers. Those are pretty! That is one thing I miss about Texas.

Part of Pheasants Forever 's habitat program includes what they call Pollinator projects /plots .The decline of honey bees is at least partially related to the loss of wild flowers .Mono culture ,weed killer and the idea that every blade of grass must be manicured to look like a golf course has eliminated many of the wildflowers that insects feed on .Many people today would look at your picture and think weeds But nature is diversity and it does not operate in a vacuum. If you watch that area for a complete year you will see some flowers blooming early spring and others not blooming until late summer Nice picture

Ground nesting songbirds such as the bobolink ,Henslow Sparrow and Bobwhite Quail are some of the fastest disappearing birds in the North American Continent The warm season grasses like switch grass,Big and Little Bluestem Weeping Love Grass are just a few of the types of grass many song birds nest in .Those grasses along with a variety of prairie wildflowers are home and food sources to a large number of different animals and birds

There is a large number of wildflower /plants/now labeled as weeds that are critical to the life cycle of many insects birds and wildlife in general And yet we have become so educated we completely miss the point that by eliminating those plants we are interfering in those animals habitat In my county the state ag extension office has declared the milkweed as a noxious weed .If you have it growing in your property it is required that you kill it as not spread to other people's property .And yet it is a critical plant in the life cycle of the Monarch butterfly .Who says that a dandelion or the white clover growing in your yard is a weed
