All Treasure Hunting
Hello everyone,
Got something really cool again.
Got it this summer, maybe a month ago, at a local flea market in P.E.I.
I went out with the intent of treasure hunting and wasn't disappointed,
(i hunt my treasure more often at sales , i have more success finding stuff that way than digging.)
very modestly priced $...,it was on the bottom of a large pile of old jewelry...
I have since had it tested and apparently its not sterling.
its about 1 & 5/8 wide,,, 1 & 6/8 tall.
weights 24.4 grams
top hoop is broken, i added the rope myself.
i have done a bit of research, its a Greek style cross, a very old style medieval or older,
looks a lot like some Viking crosses and hammers.
can anyone can speak as to the relevance of the markings? im geusing the 5 sacred wounds of Jesus, but with two crosses for both feet, total of 6 x marks.

thanks.

To me it looks like hippie jewelry from the 1960's.

It's a nice piece. Looks to be a modern metal formed to look "ancient," but a good find in any event.

Looks like pewter to me.

Probably newer hand cast jewelry, like others said, maybe hippie jewelry. I see a lot of videos of people pouring molten silver into a crude mold to make jewelry.

Maybe instead of beign made in an old fashion or, beign made to look old, maybe it actualy is old.... I think the tool marks, form, patina etc are all genuine and speak for them selves, i have lots of jewelry, i know the difference between modern hippie stuff, and ancient, anyone ever seen this pattern of markings on a cross???????

Why would a hippie wear a greek style cross, why would a hippie wear a cross?..were the markings just decoration or did they mean something.....?,. I just searched a bunch on old 1960s hippie jewelry, cant find nothing like it... Someone please explain how this is "hippie"

No, both feet are already accounted for.

I think your 6 wounds are butterflys, 1960 I would bet.

I think it is modern and cast using green sand or delft clay. I say that because it appears to have a line on the sides of the item that wasn't filed off. I believe that the original was carved in wax, plastic, or wood and pressed between two molds then the mold separated and the original removed then the void casted and hence the line in the casted item. If it was lost wax cast there would be no line around the sides. It reminds me of Byzantine types crosses if I remember the era but I think all that old stuff was lost wax or or cuttlefish bone cast. I think that the back is hammered using a chasing hammer or dap and the other shapes are hand punched. If I was trying to recreate this I would do it that way.

I know an antique shop that gives you the exact percentages in a metal, just by scanning it. I had that done with a button that came out as shiny gold, without gilt, and found out that it contained a small amount of silver, along with copper and tin (and was found caked in clay/mud). You may be able to eliminate some modern alloys by doing that, such as 90% and 92.5%. Good luck!

Not so easy for me, no xrf on pei, i will have to wait till my next vacation. Also the seam lines are not at all aligned, some sides have two seam lines, hard to imagine it came from from a 2 peice sand mold, was probably cast into stone. Also see where they punched the whole to hang the the cross, thats not modern. The 6 x 's are an odd shape like a viking symbol, even the star stamps, i think the six x's stand for the, wounds of JC left hand ,right hand, left foot ,right foot, open side, and crown of thorns

don't know if id say hippie jewelry - but the punch marks in it are from newer tools
and they usually used a solid piece of metal than one with back hollowed out - the metal looks as though it has silver in it :dontknow:
I'd have to see it in person
the strikes on the "X's"/butterflys are to defined for something medieval and the tool used would have to have been harder than the material being struck
same with the "star" tool punches - the marks were all struck into the metal - not formed by a pattern in a mold
if you found(dug up) in an area up there that you were finding trade silver or Jesuit stuff than it would be hard to argue that you
have something there - but I would have to say older new stock
bring to a museum or send pics to experts - easy to find someone using google - prove every one and me wrong -- I hope you do
sincere good luck

In this video a guy makes two very similar to yours, by melting and pouring silver into a mold.
