Oh well, it's not my first silly question I guess.

I was reading that some of the Ace 350 owners were having problems picking up silver coins. Being that I have yet to find a silver coin with mine, I couldn't help but wonder if my 350 was skipping any.

So,,,,,,

There's a guy at the local flea market that sells coins. I was thinking I might buy 2 or 3 for testing and calibration purposes? Sounds reasonable, right? But this guy has lots of different coins and I'm unsure which 3 to buy. Hense my question,,,,,, which three silver coins would you recommend I buy,,,,,,,, and why? I was thinking about a Mercury, just cause I like the way they look. But I also think maybe a Roosevelt dime as it is small and likely to be several in the ground in rural SC. Which 3 do you think, based on location and size of coins for testing.

Whatever you buy, make sure it's "junk" silver and not an actual collectors coin. Hate for you to pay the bucks and toss an UNC into the sand :)

He, he,,,,,,, nah,,, I was thinking the roughest, cheapest coins he had that I would have to worry over.

Well, just do a half, quarter and dime.
Then get the same in clad to see if you can tell a difference.

But my advice is to start out in all metal mode and dig everything until you have lots of time under your belt. Dig it up, and when you know what it is, go over it with your various discrims and see what they would have told you.

Oh dont be silly man. Just kidding! Silver is the most conductive element known to man. My old Craftsman stud finder will find a silver coin three inches deep any day and seven times on Sunday. Any crappy tecter will sing like a banshee on any silver coin. But having said that, that was an excellent question! I dont think it was silly at all really.

stick with it! I have found I don't have to swing as fast as I did w/ other machine. If you swing slower, you will find it makes a difference. Do test swings, you'll see what I mean. Coins on edge are a challenge(see my post in Todays finds), still have a learning curve w/ that myself. As a newbie, I am very happy w/ the 350, Don't waste $ on a Rosie if your getting a Merc, they read the same, unless you're planning on planting a test garden w/ your coins. Don't neglect nickels..a response all their own. You will find treasures, just gotta have patience and Faith. good luck.

Yeah coins on edge...here's the problem. You can make a test bed, and throw coins in and practice, but at the end of the day there's no way you can really know what your detector is telling you in the real world until you dig the target.
Is it silver? Gold? Clad? A pull tab? Ring? What if the coin is on edge? Totally different response. What if it's being masked by something else?
So the only practical thing to do is to go out and hunt. Dig stuff up until you have a confidence level that you kind of know what's going on under the coil, and then realize that if you choose to pass on a signal based on your educated guess, you might still be missing something great! :)
Happy hunting!
