My thoughts would be along the lines of a old larger type cotter key (Cotter Pin) from a buckboard or other such piece of equipment. The tips would have been bent to prevent it from working loose or falling out. Just one thought.

Think you're right on. Psgen, as the points seem to be randomly bent rather by manufacture.

Had to go back and look closer. Since there is no apparent hinge in the loop, I think that rules out dividers and cotter key moves to the head of the line!

Found this in the same area where I found a few flat buttons and two classic head large cents (1808-1814). It looks to me like a latch for a gate or door but maybe someone has seen this before and can help me ID it.

Thanks for looking.

I'd go with gudgeon for a gate on a post. Now they screw in, but that one would have been driven in. The ends that stuck out the opposite side of the post were peened over (making it safer and much stronger). Post rotted and now that's what remains. The pintle would then be "L" shaped. Fancy versions have one pin longer so it's easier to drop the gate on (only have to line up one at a time instead of two at once).

If found near water you can claim it's from the rudder post of a captain's launch from a pirate ship and get some funding to help locate the nearby hidden treasure. ;D

Thanks for the replies all.

Sorry Charlie....no water near here but thanks for thinking that way! Will look for pictures of the items that you all mentioned.

Thanks again
