Antique Child's Elephant Ring Dated 1869

I finnally figured out how old this one ring is. I found this back in my first year of detecting. I got it with my first radio shack detector. It is small and does not fit on my little finger even. Nice design on it, inside is Pat. 97606, i found a site that gives the years certain numbers were issued. So this ring goes back to 1869. Might be political or circus related. It registers high on the MXT, in the 70-80's depending on how you hold it when you scan it with the coil. So if brass it reads too high, could be copper or silver. Here are the best photos to date. What would this be worth?

Wow - thats a nice ring ! I don't think it's political . They didn't start using the elephant as a symbol for the republican party till 1874 , when Harpers Weekly put one in a cartoon with a donkey . Cool find !

Neat little ring! However, even though the patent number isn't preceded by a "D," it's for a design patent, not a mechanical patent. Since it falls in the range of design patents #94179 - #98044, that means it dates from 1935.

The mechanical patent #97606 from 1869 is for a ditching plow.

The design patent #97606 from 1935 is actually for a type of jewelry stone setting, but apparently the manufacturer who held it also claimed that it applied to the ring you found.

Re: Antique Child's Elephant Ring Dated 1869

I typed the number in wrong, it's 96706

Re: Antique Child's Elephant Ring Dated 1869

Okay, here's the scoop on that number:

U.S. utility/mechanical patent #96706 - Nov. 9, 1869: bed bottom

U.S. design patent #96706 - Aug. 27, 1935: amusement game cabinet

Maybe someone else will have better luck tracking it down.

I seen the plow one several years ago, the site only comes up with what was entered for the number. Remember back then records were not too accurate. I also used a site that gave the years certain numbers were issued. It is a neat little ring! I guess I'll part with it if the price is right. ;D

I'd part with a solid "buck" for it. (plus shipping and handling, of course) ;)

Re: Antique Child's Elephant Ring Dated 1869

Just a buck? It got a little more than that.

Re: Antique Child's Elephant Ring Dated 1869

It could of at a different time. But one never knows how anything will do at any given point in time. I sold a lot of dug stuff so far. Then there are the odd items found a rumage sales and thrift stores. Look at the Pillsbury doughboy shirt i sold. Bought for 50 cents. Good profit on that one.
