Antique Powder Flasks

I am trying to research two old brass(?) powder flasks. One is an American Flask and Cap Co (circa 1860), but it has etched in numbers above the slots that meter the amount of black powder? Maybe that was for the hunter to know what to select for certain bullets/charge? The second one looks older. I don’t have access to Rilings book. I hope to narrow the age of them, so I can put them on a shelf….

You are correct in your assumption that the numbers have to do with adjusting the weight of the charge thrown. By twisting and pulling or pushing the spout one can set it at any of the numbers, which represent drams apothecary weight, which is the measurement used for muzzle loading shotguns. The American Flask and Cap Co. was established in 1857, when the American Flask Co merged with a maker of percussion caps. It is listed under that name in the NYC commercial directory from the 1857/1858 edition and thereafter until the 1869/1870 edition, apparently indicating that it had ceased operations.
