While in the woods yesterday, I came across this metal thermometer back. It's about 9.25" long. The scale runs from -40 to 180 degrees and says "Fahrenheit" across the top. I thought some of the terms it used were interesting, especially "blood heat" for the human body temperature.

I was wondering if anyone could help me get an estimate of how old this piece is. I've dug bottles from the turn of the century in the same area. Any insight would be appreciated!

Oh, and sorry about the rotated photos. Not sure what's up with that...

No idea about the age, but that would be pretty cool to restore. Wire wheel it to bare metal, paint it, and find a new glass thermometer to put in it.

Welcome to Tnet! Interesting find.

Cool find and if you try to restore with a wire wheel start on the back incase it's too aggressive. Welcome to the Obsession. :headbang:

Good point. If the metal is soft, you could eat it away.

Thank you for the feedback and welcomes, guys!

That is pretty cool. A similar thermometer was found by another TNet member and posted here a few years ago. http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/today-s-finds/271168-another-blood-heat-thermometer.html

Yes, this looks a lot like what I found - I'll have to do some research on the J.R. Pool (Poul?) company. And a restoration would be fun, but like Hunter mentioned, I'll have to be gentle. The metal is easily pliable in my hands. I'm guessing maybe tin or zinc.
