Hi,
I am looking to purchase a new Tesoro soon. My questions concern any advantages of a Vaquero over a Golden uMax. I mainly hunt coins in really trashy areas. I was sold on the Golden, largely because of the multi tones, but started to give the Vaquero a look as I like the GB feature. I've had stability issues with other machines in my area. Reading the Tesoro catalog, the Vaquero has something called HOT technology. What I'm looking for, is input from people who have used these machines in nasty trashy environments and how they performed. Does the different circuitry really make a difference? I'm on the fence with this one, so please let me know what you think.

Thanks,

Aaron

well i've owned both and really liked them both but this is where the vaq will come in is depth but loves iron nails, the golden i had was awsome but the depth at best with mine anyways was right around 7" max but i found more coins with that than any other machine practicly, its great for parks or tot lots and field events, where the vaquero is a killer on the old home stead stuff and will say when outfitted with the 5'75" coil then you will really get the coins for sure!

Hey Aaron, you may have answered your own question. If you have stability issues (hot ground) and If you want to get deeper you'd need a machine that can adjust to ground conditions. Or, I hear that Tesoro can make adjustments to the internal GB pot if you send them your machine and a soil sample, but even then if your soil changes alot it would be a waste of time and effort. Sooo, I'd give the advantage to the V ONLY because of your ground. Oh and most definately like Vaq said get that 5.75 (concentric, my preferance) its a killer in trash, Jhar

Hi,
Thanks for your input guys. This is the kind of input I'm looking for. I'm still curious about the internal differences, i.e. the uMax vs. HOT circuitry, but it is really not important. Mostly a curiosity. And I did not know that they would recalibrate the machine for you. That is good to know. I've watched the Tesoro forum for a while, and people seem to be hot and cold about the machines. Either they work great or badly in their location. Thus, the concern about the GB. The closest dealer is 100 miles away, so I have to make a road trip to put my hands on one before buying. So this input is very helpful. Anyone else like to offer an opinion?

Thanks,
Aaron

That's awesome (maybe not the 100 miles part) that you can put your hands on a machine before you pull the trigger.

There is a Tesoro Dealer right here in Wagoner. Tracy's Detector sales. No need to go to OK City.

His tele # is (918) 485-6529 If you call him tell him Paul said to give him a call, he'll take good care of you. I promise!

Thanks Paul, that's great news that there is a dealer that close. Thanks for the heads up. I can't believe I didn't know that. I'll have to sneak over there soon.

slowNsteady,

I agree pretty much with what everybody has said about the two detectors, but I would like to add something if I may. The tone ID has been mentioned regarding the Golden, but know one has said anything about the notch mode? The Golden uMax is the only Tesoro that has the notch and also the only one that hunts with a tone ID. You gave a very limited explanation of your detecting preferences so I would not want to make a recommendation as to which detector to buy, but I didn't want the notch setting to go unsaid. It works! Joe

Hi,
Thanks for your input Joe. I usually set the machine just above iron and go nuts. The notch feature is not something I typically use, but that has been a consideration as well. I know it's perfect for looking for a specific lost item if the need arises. I'm leaning toward the Golden anyways. I have 5 detectors now and 3 have multi tone, so I'm used to that set up. As long as it will remain stable, I'm all for it. I'm going to put hands on both machines hopefully Friday. One thing I have found out is that the dealers will try to point me in the right direction. It's just up to me to listen! Again, thanks for your input.

Or...you could look for a used Cibola with the GB mod done. No warranty, but they are a heck of a good machine even without the mod, and deep too.

Hi,
I have not heard of 'mods' like this being done. If anyone out there can tell me about this I would appreciate it. I'm not going to mess up a perfectly good lifetime warranty, but I am curious who's able to do this and with what machines.
Thanks again,
Aaron
