Have been lurking on this forum for awhile, and am very empressed by the postings and knowledge to be found on the forum, I would very much like to do this, but being a novice and very little knowledge on the subject, I was wondering if there was anyone from southwest Iowa on the forum, this area is basically no-till and almost impossible to find tilled ground, was wondering if anyone was hunting no-till, as the only ground moved is very little, thanks for listening to my inquiry, and am looking forward to your replies, thanks again.

Welcome to T-Net, I actually have very good luck surface hunting untilled land! The best places to start in my opinion would be around rivers and creeks. I also like to walk land that has recently been logged. Im not from Iowa, but I believe that this would be a great place to start looking for artifacts...Good Luck!

I am not from Iowa Old coin but I do know that the southwestern corner of Iowa produces a fair amount of paleo artifacts with Mill County reporting the most in that particular region.

No-till farming makes it much more difficult to field hunt artifacts nowadays. Check the streams in your area and see if they have gravel and rock bars in them. If so, I would concentrate on looking on those bars.

Thanks for the input, AM-ARK and 11KBP, I live about three counties above Mills county, the creeks here have a lot of silt in them and don't run very clear, we tend to have more mud and sand mixed bars than sand and gravel, although I do know that through the years there have been some found, but they straightened the big river in our area many years ago, which has lessened the sand bars found on it. Also there seems to be no old timers in this immediate area, that had this hobby, for me to get any leads on, as to where to search, thats why I was interested to see if any were on this forum, again, thank you for your input, and continued success with your hunts.

11kbp nailed the link for you. All I know is I have seen some of the finest axes and Celt's come from your state that a friend had for 30 years in a steel pot!!. I about fell over all that stuff banging around in that pot, anyway,,,, Study the old maps of rivers and look at elevations. Find corners or bends with high elevations in creeks and rivers. Maybe even a ridge (elev) to block the west wind near water and you may find a place to hunt. Even with no till they will lightly disc every three years to aerate (sp?). Think high ground or a rise in a field near a water source.Look for members on here from your area everyone is kind and helpful. Send them an e-mail.
I wish you luck in your new journey.

Thanks TnMountain, I'll take all the advise I can get, to narrow down hunting areas, as my old legs give out pretty easily, and my breathings not much better, my wife says that if I take up this hobby, she's going too, as she likes fossils and indain artifacts, anyway enough rambling, keep up the posts and happy hunting.

Well maybe if we can keep this post up front where it can be read I am sure one of these kind hearted hunters from your area will chime in with some better advice than mine. I remember the first person to take me and share this hobby. Its a healthy hobby and you may go at your own pace. Good luck sir :icon_sunny:

Thanks TnMountains, hadn't caught up to my post, till today, so I'm a little slow in answering, haven't found any Iowa hunters from my area yet, but still hoping, anyway thanks for the kind words, and may your hunts be prosperous.

This is a good hobby to do together, twice the eye power! And it can certainly be done at your own pace. Enjoy!
