I have been hunting a property that has been in the "H" family for over two hundred years and found a personalized watch fob the reads "SMH" (the "H" is clear on the reverse). I would love to find out who the original owner was before returning it to the family. My early research points to several candidates from 1702-1875, with all but one being women. I have yet to determine the middle name of my only male candidate but he would be the oldest of the bunch (b.1702).
The fob is double sided with each identical face soldered 'back to back', resulting in a fairly hefty piece. If anyone has any insight that might help me narrow down the original owner, I would love to hear it.
Does the style or manufacture point to a likely date range? Did women use similar (heavy) fobs?

Thanks for the help - HD

I can't help with an ID but any Fob is a good Fob - congrats !

The fob manufacturer could have been Wilcox. Not 100% sure though.

Cool Fob!!! Congrats!!!

Call me crazy but looking at the picture now, I can't NOT see "USMA" (United States Military Academy).
I will need to look at it more when I get home but I may have seen the "H" because of the known family name.
Stay tuned.....

Bastion Bros. company created fobs like these too. Cool find! Get a Jewlers loop and look closely for a makers mark (around edges too). This could help...

Nice fob! Probably a custom piece for a gift?

I agree with E-Trac Ohio...Watch fobs are a treat to find. They don't come around too often ( at least for me). Congrats!

As to date range I'll guess circa 1890's - 1915. Nice find !
