I dug this on a property today. The house has been around sine the 1820's. The P shaped item is made of brass. The P shape is 4 1/4" long.

I was thinking part of a half-spoon snaffle bit - horse tack like Terry said.

This is a strange one.The part that swivels looks to be able to have tag slipped in it.Does the other part, the end away from the ring taper to a point?

It does look like what Charlie and Terry said the only thing I cant figure is the thin metal with the clipped out piece unless it was a repaired part and that held a tag to be removed when put back together.
