Found this on an old ball field...they used to have pigeon shoots here. Thought it may be a leg band for a bird but wasn't sure. Any ideas?

Has, AU 69 PGC on it and also a 699. I think it is aluminum.

They solved it in the Today's finds already....you guys are good!

mighty-mace, it looks like the "band" is solid. Is it? Aren't leg bands strips of aluminum wrapped around the leg, rather than solid things like yours? How would you stuff the poor birds leg into a solid cylinder? It would be a mighty tight squeeze.

I pulled my previous post because it was too late before I noticed you felt it was solved.

Good point about it looking different than the riveted band johnnyi... is it a split ring?

They may be put on at Birth

most Racers Raise or buy them From Birth.

The solid bands are put on when the young birds foot is small enough to
slide through the band. Some times the band will come off before the bird
grows enough to keep it on. There is a site that tells what all the numbers
and letters mean and how to report a found band.

Its definately a solid band....

Found this site which must be what the AU stands for.

http://www.pigeon.org/

Year must be 69 like Jeff stated, and I'm assuming the PGC is club name and 699 is bird ID?

Would be neat to get in contact with the club if its still around, still looking.

Bands are put on at birth, like previously said, when the foot is still small enough to fit through.

They will grow into in a couple of days.

The bands are solid. This is like a birth certificate and serial number for the animals that can't be changed as they are solid and can't be removed without being cut.

Crimped bands prove nothing as they can be removed and replaced.

Birds die, and the band remains.

If you pinch a bird's toes together they are actually smaller than the bird's leg. A solid band will slip right over and when the bird relaxes it's foot the toes stick out too far to let it come off. Take a look at a bird's foot and it's easy to see what I mean. Oh, and they band pigeons when they are about ten days old.

I admit, I don't have a pigeon...

But squeeze my parrots foot and see if you can get the leg band off before she gets your finger off :D

Correctly sized bands will not come off of a live bird without being cut. This is how domestic breeding is proven -vs- illegally smuggled birds.

Look at the properly sized band on her left leg...

As a matter of fact she just laid an egg. (non fertile)

She is actually a bad mother. She will sit on the egg outside of her cage as an excuse to not get locked up. Otherwise, child abandonment.

We can't let her get near a warm hard boiled egg at breakfast either, she sits on them and ruins breakfast...

I want to qualify my statement about folding a birds foot. It has to be a very young bird and one that won't eat your hand. Good Tip GIB! M  nty
