Found this on some old farm land from the mid 1800s. Was just looking for some ideas as to what it was for. Thanks for any help

Freddy, here's some "more-specific" info for you. Your find is a particular form of horseharness buckle-shield (strap-buckle cover) which was invented & patented in 1879. Here's a photo showing one that has the patent-date stamped on the back -- Dec. 16, 1879.
