I do a lot of mineral hunting around NH, and I see rock like this quite frequently. If I had to guess, this is some form of metamorphic rock (such as gneiss). Research a little about "lineation" and "striping" in rock formations. These have the tendency to look very similar to growth rings commonly found in petrified wood.
